On March 9, 1997, The Dallas Morning News published a story written by Tom Simmons. Mr. Simmons story, Take Stock of Harrold's Model Train Museum, recounts the beginning of Harrold's collection and how trains and Christmas are one in the same to the children of the 1940's and 1950's. Mr. Simmons tells us how Harrold took a small HO set given to him by his wife and in 5 years turned it into a 1200 piece collection. Harrold outgrew the house and started building a separate building to house his collection in November, 1994.

If you subscribe to Texas Highways, you need to dig out the December, 1999 issue. If you're a model train buff or a collector of model and toy trains, you would have kept this issue. Author Rosemary Williams and Photographer Kevin Vandivier put together an article entitled "The Joys of Toys". But let me direct your attention to pages 13 though 15. The story is titled "Choo-choo Champ". Photographer Kevin Vandivier provides the reader with a picture of Harrold Little, wearing locomotive engineer stripped bib overalls and hat, holding a White Pass extended vision caboose. In the background you will see just a tease of the model trains that Harrold has on exhibit at his Tyler museum. Mr. Vandivier also gives the reader a close up shot of a 1926 Lionel Tinplate standard gauge caboose. Then there is one more picture, the Safari Express F-3 deisel locomotive pulling a consist through a miniature town. Author Rosemary Williams tells us the story of how Harrold's wife started him on the path of building a train collection. With Harrold outgrowing the house, he acquired another building to display his train collection and to share his passion with the public. What started out as a single train set to entertain himself after his retirement from a U.S. Government job, has turned out be a private collection in a museum setting.
